🍠 Southern Candied Yams offer a classic sweet and spiced flavor that enhances the natural richness of sweet potatoes.
🔥 This comforting dish provides a perfect balance of buttery sweetness and warm spices, making it a favorite for holidays and everyday meals.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

– 3 sweet potatoes (approximately 1.5 lbs)

– 5 tablespoons salted butter (add a pinch of salt if using unsalted butter)

– 1 teaspoon cinnamon

– ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

– ½ cup brown sugar

– ¼ cup granulated sugar

– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

– 5 tablespoons salted butter

– ½ cup brown sugar

– 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

1-First, preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) to get things going. Once that’s set, peel the sweet potatoes, rinse them under cool water, and slice them into ½-inch to 1-inch thick circles. If the circles are too big for your baking dish, halve them to fit nicely, and don’t forget to grease the dish with a bit of butter for that non-stick effect.

2-Next, in a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the 5 tablespoons of salted butter. Lower the heat to medium-low and stir in the ½ cup of brown sugar, ¼ cup of granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Keep stirring for about 3 minutes until the mixture is smooth and well-blended, tasting as you go to adjust the spices if needed.

3-Now, pour this buttery sugar mixture evenly over the arranged sweet potatoes in your greased baking dish. Cover the dish with foil to lock in moisture and pop it into the preheated oven. Bake for 45 minutes, then take it out, remove the foil, give the sweet potatoes a good stir, and crank up the oven to 425°F (218°C).

4-For the final touch, bake uncovered for another 15 minutes to let everything caramelize beautifully. Once done, let the dish cool slightly before serving it warm this helps the flavors settle and makes it safer to eat. Throughout this process, keep in mind tips like adding a squeeze of orange juice for extra zing or topping with marshmallows in the last 5 to 10 minutes if you’re feeling festive.
