πŸ§€ This Southern Baked Macaroni and Cheese Creamy Classic Recipe offers a rich and velvety texture with a blend of cheeses for irresistibly comforting flavor.
🍽️ Ideal as a hearty side or satisfying main, it’s a timeless dish perfect for family gatherings and special occasions.

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

– 8 to 10 ounces elbow macaroni

– Β½ cup whole milk

– 1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk

– 2 eggs, lightly beaten

– 1Β½ teaspoons white pepper

– 1Β½ teaspoons granulated sugar

– Β½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)

– Β½ cup (1 stick) butter, cut into small pieces

– 2 tablespoons sour cream

– Β½ pound processed cheese loaf, cut into small chunks

– 8 ounces shredded Colby-Monterey Jack cheese blend (or 4 ounces Colby and 4 ounces Monterey Jack)

– 4 ounces shredded sharp cheddar cheese

– 1 cup shredded mild cheddar cheese

Instructions

1-First Step: Preheat your oven to 350Β°F. Bring a large pot of salted water to boil and cook the elbow macaroni until just shy of al dente, about 7-8 minutes as per package directions. Drain it well and transfer to a 9″ by 13″ baking dish trust me, this step sets the base for that perfect chew.

2-Second Step: In the same pot, whisk together the whole milk, evaporated milk, eggs, salt, white pepper, and granulated sugar until it’s all nicely combined into a smooth custard mixture. Pour this right over the macaroni in the dish.

3-Third Step: Add in the butter pieces, sour cream, processed cheese loaf chunks, Colby-Monterey Jack cheese blend, and sharp cheddar cheese. Stir everything together well to make sure every noodle is coated, then spread the mild cheddar cheese evenly on top for that irresistible golden crust.

4-Final Step: Pop it in the oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes until it’s bubbly and the top is lightly browned. Let it rest for about 10 minutes before serving so it sets up nicely. For more ideas on baked treats, check out our banana bread coffee cake recipe that pairs perfectly with this dish.

Notes

πŸ§€ Processed cheese loaf is key for authentic creamy texture and flavor; avoid substitutes.
πŸ§€ Grate your own cheese for better melting compared to pre-shredded cheese.
🍴 To reduce oiliness on top after baking, blot excess with a paper towel.
